This is the slum that featured in the book Shantaram and I visited the fellow Australian author's friends there. India has always fascinated me. The Indian chapter of WHAT THE MONSOON KNOWS is one of the most popular chapters for readers in my book.I was there to see for myself how women were faring and the rise of the low castes in new business culture. The kids of this slum, the folk in general, were happy and charming. Kolkata the previous week was intense.
